Dell XPS 13

Rose Gold? That’s so last year. 2019 is officially the year of Frost Silver and Arctic White. Dell decided to shake things up with a new color scheme that’s just as alluring as the previous model, if not more so. The anodized aluminum has a light gray finish that stops just short of pearlescence, looking as radiant as morning frost just before it gives way to the rising sun. The Dell logo sits triumphant in the center of the lid as the lone adornment.

The best just got even better. Not only did Dell outfit the 2019 XPS 13 with a new Intel Whiskey Lake processor, but it also fixed one of the most annoying flaws of its predecessor. No longer does its webcam point up your nose, as Dell’s engineers found a way to fit its webcam in a still-small top bezel. While the 4K model we tested offered lower battery life than some may need, we expect longer endurance on the model with a 1080p display.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Slim, lightweight design✖ Below-average battery life
✔ Strong performance
✔ Gorgeous 4K display
✔ InfinityEdge bezels with properly placed webcam

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

The Dell XPS 13 was already a great laptop and Dell has made some welcome improvements to remain our favorite ultraportable overall. The addition of Intel Whiskey Lake cements the XPS 13’s status as a mobile powerhouse. And when you’re not crunching the numbers, that vivacious 4K display is perfect for watching video. We especially like the itty-bitty webcam, killing the nosecam forever.

Acer Aspire E 15

Acer’s Aspire E 15, specifically model E5-576G-5762, is an uncommonly good deal. It’s even good by Acer’s already high standards: The manufacturer has built some of our favorite budget-friendly PCs in the past, including the Aspire VX 15 gaming laptop.

The Acer Aspire E 15’s 15-inch non-touch display is sharp, but not very colorful. In the trailer forUnbroken: Path to Redemption, the characters’ 1940s attire should have bursted with color instead, it looked drab. Also, the actor’s skin tones were pale and lifeless. On a positive note, the 1920 x 1080 panel provided enough detail for me to make out the military medals and ribbons on Louis Zamperini’s spiffy uniform.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Strong performance✖ Bulky design
✔ Lots of ports
✔ Good battery life

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

Regardless of the main components, though, you get the same base features across the models. That includes a good full-HD display, a bevy of ports new and old and even a DVD burner for those still working in the world of physical media. What’s more, you can open it up and add more memory and storage. It’s hard to say how the laptop will hold up over time, but out of the box, it’s an easy recommendation for a home office or a student who can live with its weight and size.

HUAWEI MateBook X Pro

During MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Spain, Huawei has pulled the curtain back on a brand new version of MateBook X Pro laptop with updated parts inside.

Essentially speaking, this update is a simple configuration refresh, with minor improvements to the laptop’s processor and graphics options as well as new Thunderbolt 3 support. It seems Huawei hopes to build on the critical acclaim its previous laptops have garnered by doubling down on its winning design.

Upon taking a close look at the Huawei MateBook X Pro, this isn’t the one to upgrade to if you already own last year’s model. However, newcomers will be impressed by Huawei’s knack for merging performance and panache.

Since the MateBook X Pro uses much of the same hardware as the newly-released Huawei MateBook 13 as well as the forthcoming MateBook 14, we already have a good idea of what this laptop is capable of. Look to those tests for a good idea of what to expect here in terms of performance.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Excellent display✖ Still uses recessed webcam
✔ Still offers port variety✖ Very few tangible improvements
✔ Improved power throughout

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

The latest MateBook X Pro is just as impressive as the one that came before it, if not more so with increased power throughout. However, these updates are rather small, and therefore not going to be as keenly felt by upgraders from the previous model.

Gigabyte Aero 15-X9

The slim and compact Aero 15-X9 succeeds the popular Aero 15X v8 that we reviewed last year. The new 15.6-inch gaming laptop handles modern triple-A games smoothly on its 144 Hz, 1080p display thanks to its Core i7-8750H processor, RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU and 16 GB DDR4-2666 RAM. Its NVMe SSD should ensure solid system performance too, while its Thunderbolt 3 port gives you the option of connecting an external GPU should you wish to run a desktop GPU. Read on to find out how it performs in our tests and whether it can set new standards for thin and light gaming laptops.

The Gigabyte Aero 15 series is made up of powerful yet compact 15.6-inch gaming laptops that have been well received in recent years. Most recently we reviewed the Aero 15X v8, which Gigabyte equipped with an Intel Core i7-8750H processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU. Now, the company has upgraded the Aero 15 with Nvidia GeForce RTX 20 series GPUs but has kept the 15-X9 largely the same as its predecessor, including its processor.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Slim✖ Runs hot
✔ Fast Intel storage✖ Pricey
✔ Powerful Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU✖ AI doesn’t add much
✔ Excellent 4K display

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

The Gigabyte Aero 15-X9 is an excellent gaming laptop, but it is just a slight refinement of its predecessor with a few added downsides. The Core i7-8750H processor and RTX-2070 Max-Q GPU is a winning combination that is powerful enough to handle all triple-A games at maximum graphics in 1080p. Moreover, the NVMe SSD ensures that the system runs smoothly even when it is working under sustained load. The device is easy to maintain and upgrade too, which is a bonus.

ASUS ROG Strix Scar II GL704GW

The Asus ROG Strix Scar II is a gaming laptop that packs in plenty of portable power alongside features that have been borrowed from the world of desktop gaming.

The combination of desktop features and laptop power is an intriguing proposition, especially for playing the latest titles at high refresh rates. But is it worth £1800 in the face of strong competition?

The lid is made from brushed aluminium, and the area around the keyboard and trackpad is divided between a carbon-fibre pattern and a camouflaged area made from different shades of grey. There are smart exhaust ports at the rear, and the screen’s bezel is pleasingly tiny.

The dark metal is augmented with a surprising number of RGB LEDs. A wide bar across the front of the machine can be configured, along with the lid’s ROG logo. The keyboard’s lighting can be altered in four zones and different lighting effects can be deployed.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Impressive, consistent speeds✖ Underwhelming battery life
✔ High-quality 144Hz screen✖ Poor speakers
✔ Excellent keyboard✖ Can’t always exploit 144Hz screen
✔ Sturdy, good-looking design

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

The Asus ROG Strix Scar II delivers plenty of power, a high-quality screen, good design and plenty of game-friendly features. It can’t quite deliver 144Hz-friendly frame rates in all games, but it’ll handle the vast majority of gaming scenarios with skill and speed. It’s a very impressive option if you want a well rounded gaming portable.

HP EliteBook x360

The new Elitebook has been sprinkled with updates that you’d expect in a convertible that didn’t have many major problems: HP stuck a new processor inside, shrank some bezels, made the chassis’ footprint smaller and lighter, added an LTE option, and improved the optional Active Pen. There were a few sub-par aspects about the previous model, so HP addressed them in this device, too. However, those improvements, while thoughtful, may not be crucial enough to push current Elitebook users to upgrade.

HP changed little about the Elitebook x360’s skeleton it’s still an all aluminum convertible with a unibody chassis and slick, diamond-cut edges. It now has a 10 percent smaller footprint than the previous model, measuring 15.8mm thick and weighing 2.76 pounds, and the bezels around its 13.3-inch touchscreen are slimmer than ever before. The side bezels are 50 percent thinner, and the chin is 39 percent smaller, too.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Stunning display✖ Expensive
✔ Comfortable keyboard
✔ Punchy audio
✔ Good battery life

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

While the optional Active Pen looks identical to the previous one, it has a few important improvements. For one, the Pen recharges via a USB-C port hidden underneath a flap of gray silicone near its top. That’s much better than the previous model, which used a AAAA battery for power. Considering the Elitebook x360 charges via USB-C itself, users can charge both the convertible and its pen using the same cable.

Lenovo Yoga C930

The Yoga C930 exhibits all the design prowess we’re used to seeing from Lenovo. The Iron Gray chassis of my review sample was nearly black, while the ‘Mica’ alternative is a lighter, more silvery grey. Either way, it provides a very solid shell for the innards. The lid is perhaps a little thick (4.5mm according to my measurements), but it doesn’t bend or bow in the hands.

The Yoga C930 measures 322mm wide by 227mm deep by 14.5mm thick (at its thinnest), and weighs 1.38kg. It is not too large or too heavy for a small backpack, and considering the chassis packs in a 13.9-inch screen, it’s pretty tidily designed.

The top and base sections are offset, a design feature accentuated by an angle at the long front edge. This also makes it easier to open the laptop one handed. At the back, the distinctive watchband hinge from previous Yoga models is replaced by a Rotating Sound Bar that creates a visual break between the two sections, while also allowing for the 360-degree rotation.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Solid chassis✖ Minimal ports and connectors
✔ Great speakers✖ Screen could be more vibrant
✔ A stylus housing that works
✔ Good battery life

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

The Lenovo Yoga C930 is a laptop that almost manages to tick every box: tough yet reasonably lightweight; superb sound output and a good screen; a well-designed keyboard; a privacy cover for the camera; and plenty of storage and power even in the entry level unit. On top of all that, there’s a good storage solution for the provided stylus, and at least with the FHD model all day battery life.

Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Apple updates the MacBook Pro 13 with a new quad-core processor and a True Tone display for 2018, but only the more expensive model with the Touch Bar. We have a closer look at the performance of the new MacBook Pro in the following review. What can you expect for the price of 1,999 Euros (i5)?

Apple quietly updated its MacBook Pro series. The exterior did not change, but the manufacturer from Cupertino finally uses Intel’s 8th Gen. processors with four cores (Coffee Lake-U). Except for that, the displays now also support the True Tone technology, which is already familiar from the mobile devices iPhone or iPad, respectively.

Our review today is about the smaller 13-inch model, but only the more expensive Touch Bar version received the updates. The less expensive MBP 13 with function keys on the other hand is still sold with 2017 specs. Apple might be repeating the story of the MacBook Air, which did not get any updates for quite a while and became less expensive over the years. We are not fans of this development, because our reviews of the 2017 models showed the more expensive Touch Bar model was not the best choice for every user.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Exquisite look and feel✖ Adapters needed to connect most devices
✔ Screen is among the best we’ve tested✖ Keyboard is well below average
✔ Loud, enjoyable speakers
✔ Spacious, responsive touchpad

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

The announcement of the new 2018 MacBook Pro lead to many headlines. They were mainly focused on the performance of the new processors, which did not meet the expectations. Apple released a software update one week later, which was supposed to improve the performance. At ~1.5 GB, however, it was a major update and we got the impression that the software just was not ready for the launch. We know this problem from other manufacturers, but we did not experience it on any of the previous MacBooks on this level.

Acer Swift 7

Acer’s Swift range of laptops (headlined by the excellent Swift 5) is designed to be as portable as possible, and the all-new Acer Swift 7 keeps that vision alive. Measuring just 8.98mm at its thinnest, the Swift 7 is currently the world’s slimmest laptop at least according to an internal Acer survey.

Whether it really does take the crown for most slender laptop or not, Acer has managed to slip a 14-inch Full HD display in there, as well as an Intel Core i7 (i7-7Y75) CPU, 256GB SSD, and a 4580 mAh battery.

This laptop may be super-slim, yet it isn’t quite as compact as the likes of the Dell XPS 13 or Huawei’s MateBook X Pro. Thanks to the 14-inch build and the rather thick bezel beneath the Swift 7’s display, you’ll still struggle to fit this laptop into a handbag or smaller man-bag. For carrying around, it’s better suited for a briefcase or backpack.

PROS:CONS:
✔ Thinnest laptop around✖ Limited connectivity
✔ Powerful display✖ Restrictive performance
✔ Surprisingly strong usability✖ Not quite as compact as rivals
✔ 4G SIM support

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

Although very slim and nice-looking, the Acer Swift 7 isn’t the most portable laptop around, while also underperforming compared with rivals.

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

The Surface Pro has proven to be a tough act to follow. Microsoft has been the two in one standard bearer for the past several years, as successive generations of Surface Pro became the default idea of what a Windows tablet/laptop hybrid should be. But it’s also been a hard idea to move away from, and the changes in the last few versions of the Surface Pro have been almost imperceptible, in both design and performance.

As if to remind us that this is indeed a new model, Microsoft has ditched the last couple of years of just calling this device Surface Pro and gone back to numbered versions, naming this the Surface Pro 6 (I had honestly lost count by this point).

That’s a good thing, because at least from the outside, it would appear that not much else at all has changed about the Surface Pro aside from its low-key new matte black color option. The Surface Pro 6 still has a screen bezel that’s on this thick side, unlike many modern laptops, tablets and hybrids that are shaving screen borders down. It still sits awkwardly on the knee (or lap), and it still includes only minimal ports, without even the increasingly popular USB-C.

Click Here To Get Prices, Reviews and Details

PROS:CONS:
✔ Still among lightest and thinnest 2-in-1s✖ Still no USB-C or Thunderbolt 3
✔ Quad-core processor is a big upgrade✖ Type Cover still sold separately
✔ Microsoft promises up to 13.5 hours of battery life✖ External chassis is essentially unchanged again
✔ Gorgeous new black color

Review Discussion of Verified Purchases:

The Surface Pro 6 isn’t for everyone. It’s for people who will truly benefit from having a detachable 2-in-1 that’s light enough to carry anywhere and flexible enough to use as a tablet or laptop.
